Day 40: Escaping the Feds
FBI! Open up!
I have never, of course, experienced an early morning raid but I assume it feels, at first, like what happened this morning. When I IM'd Aly about our experience, it went like this:
Aly: hi neurosurgery!
I get it. They have surgery coming up and doing rounds needs to get fitted in before that part of the day. It's still jarring, though, when someone comes into your room shining lights before you even register where you are. The good news is that the visit was necessary because neurosurgery need to sign off on him getting discharged tomorrow. He was admitted as a neurosurgery patient on Day 1. The other good news is that, unlike me, Charlie actually managed to go back to sleep after they left. He may have had to roll over to show his incision but I had to get out of bed to close the door.
Part of today's day included another family centered rounds. This time to confirm that he as met his goals and, so, is free to go. As of Monday afternoon, his therapy sessions here are finished.
We did have a fitting session with his new wheelchair. It's funny, he didn't have a wheelchair for a long time. Then it became clear it would really help him at school. Then it became really helpful for him in other situations as his walking ability deteriorated. Then, post surgery, it was needed all the time. Now as I watch him getting fitted with this snazzy new one, I realized we haven't used a wheelchair in a couple of weeks.
We have a night here and then a final meeting with the medical team in the morning. I said to Charlie "this time tomorrow, we'll be halfway to Mexico"
"We're not going to Mexico"
