Day 4: Sunday
I'll open with a couple of stories from Saturday after I posted but not justifying a part 2.
Charlie's laptop, that can be seen in the photo at the end of yesterday's post is actually a hand-me-down from his grandmother. It is in great condition but, sadly, the power supply wasn't and yesterday it gave up. This left us with a dilemma - do we wait until tomorrow to get one or rush to get one tonight? We couldn't leave Charlie without his precious laptop so I headed out to get a new one.
While I was gone, there was an alarm. Not a normal beeping like there is all the time in a hospital. This was different. Aly got up to see what was going on and when she looked out the door of Charlie's room, doors had automatically closed in so that the section of the ward was now closed off.
It's a terrible state of affairs in this state of this nation that Aly's first assumption was that there was an active shooter in the building. It was a fire drill.
So, to Sunday. I came with breakfast tacos and we had our first Physical and Occupational Therapy visit. They were a good team and worked very well with Charlie. They got him to sit up on the edge of his bed! He sat there for a full 5 minutes (bribed by a YouTube video, of course).
They described the precautions that we have to take when moving Charlie around and called them Spinal Protocols. I said I bought Spinal Protocols' first album back in 1989 but nobody got my joke and we all moved on uncomfortably.
We also got another visit from Dr. Pain and she was just as great as yesterday. Today we spoke about the best plan for what to do when the epidural comes out. As I described yesterday, that is targeting the pain in his spine but there's a risk of infection if it's left in for too long. She decided she wanted to consult with neurosurgery (on a Sunday! Dr. Pain is so cool) and then came back to see us with the update. It's coming out on Monday morning and she has written her plan to address the pain. There will be a different member of The Pain Team® attending tomorrow and that person has some big shoes to fill.

Sending you lots of love and healthy vibes, Charlie! The project fam has been thinking & asking about you too!
